There’s no mistaking the lovable but wiley Captain Jack Sparrow.
Johnny Depp dressed up as his famous – or infamous – character from Pirates of the Caribbean as he took to the stage at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California on Saturday.
The 52-year-old was appearing to fans at the ultimate Disney fanatic event, fresh from receiving a Disney Legend award from the company’s CEO Bob Iger on Friday.
The star – who has become best known for the roguish pirate said to be based in part on the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards – joined the event ‘Worlds, Galaxies, and Universes: Live Action at The Walt Disney Studios’.
He sported his distinctive costume, complete with heavily kohled eyes, to discuss the fifth film in the series, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which is due out on July 7, 2017.
The series started in 2003 and has spawned three video games and three blooper reels, raking in a stunning $3.7 billion worldwide for Disney.
The actor was admonished for bringing his two Yorkshire terriers into Australia when he flew there with wife Amber Heard in May to film on the Pirates set.
Meanwhile, Disney have confirmed that Orlando Bloom will return for the fifth installment of the franchise.
Reprising his role as Will Turner, the 38-year-old will appear in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales; it was also revealed at the Disney D23 Expo on Saturday after he previously said he wasn’t sure on the part late last year.
Orlando played the character for three previous movies alongside Depp – but didn’t appear in 2011’s On Stranger Tides, the fourth part.
Speaking of rumours of his return last December, he told IGN: ‘I’m of course Davy Jones now, so I’m down the bottom of the ocean. It might be kind of fun to do something where I’m rumbling round the bottom of the ocean, because I won’t look anything like me. Get all gnarly.’
Fans of the franchise will know that Davy Jones was the captain of the Flying Dutchman – originally played by Bill Nighy – whose tentacles resemble a scary mixture of aquatic features.
The actor hinted that his storyline will centre on Will’s bond with his offspring.
It’s known that the plot will revolve around down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow, who is still trying to triumph against the deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis Captain Salazar.
His mission is to seek out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that can bestow control over the seas.
Other actors thought to make an appearance in the fifth film include British Skins’ actress Kaya Scodelario, Eat Pray Love star Javier Bardem and Kings Of New York’s Stephen Graham.
